This is the rule that stops most work scams cold: a real employer never asks you to pay them to start working. If an “employer” wants money for training materials, a starter kit, a background check, or “equipment,” and especially if they want it in gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a wire transfer, it is a scam. Full stop.
A common trick is the fake check: they mail or email you a check, tell you to deposit it and send part of it back or buy supplies. Days later the check bounces, and the money you sent is gone for good.
What to do: Never pay to get a job, and never send back money from a check an employer gave you. If anyone asks, walk away, you have just spotted the scam and saved yourself.
