Not all payment methods are equal. Scammers choose the ones that make recovery slow, confusing, or impossible.

FTC guidance says scammers often demand payment with:

  • gift cards
  • wire transfers
  • cryptocurrency
  • payment apps to strangers
  • cash pickups or mailed cash

Why? Because these methods move quickly and usually come with fewer built-in protections than a standard credit card purchase.

This is the core difference between Level 1 and Level 2. In Level 1, you learned to spot the scam pattern. In Level 2, you are learning to recognize the money rail the scam runs on.

Founder note: Corey built Lumoset because the scam usually becomes real only when money actually moves. If you can stop the payment method, you can often stop the worst part of the harm.

A quick example: the caller says your bank account is at risk and you must move money right now. The panic may sound new. The payment method is the clue. If they want wire transfer, crypto, or gift cards, you already know enough to stop.

What to do:

  • Pay more attention to how they want payment than to the story they are telling.
  • Treat unusual payment methods as part of the scam, not a side detail.
  • Slow down the moment someone controls both the urgency and the payment method.
