Scam losses to older adults are rising fast.
The Federal Trade Commission's most recent report to Congress found that fraud losses reported by adults 60 and older rose roughly fourfold in four years — from about $600 million in 2020 to $2.4 billion in 2024 in reported losses alone. Because most fraud is never reported, the FTC estimates the real toll on older adults in 2024 may be as much as $81.5 billion. Investment scams and impersonation scams, often run through social media and phone calls, are driving the sharpest increases.
