Using AI Chatbots for Everyday Tasks, Safely

Using AI Chatbots for Everyday Tasks, Safely

A chatbot can help with wording, planning, and practice. It should not be treated like a trusted expert.

AI chatbots can be useful for everyday tasks: rewriting a note, making a grocery list, practicing questions before a call, or explaining a confusing word. The safety rule is simple. Use the chatbot as a helper, not as the final judge of truth.

Use it for drafts, not decisions

A chatbot can help you start. Ask it to make a message clearer, list steps, or explain a term. Do not let it decide medical, legal, banking, or tax choices for you.

Never share private details

Do not paste Social Security numbers, bank logins, passwords, medical record numbers, or private family details. Treat the chat box like a public place.

Ask it to show uncertainty

A useful prompt is: ‘Tell me what you are unsure about.’ This reminds you that AI can sound confident when it is wrong.

Check important answers somewhere real

For health, money, benefits, or safety, check the answer against a government site, your provider, your bank, or another trusted source.

Keep your own voice

If AI writes a message for you, read it out loud. Change anything that does not sound like you.

The habit that matters most

The habit that matters most is to pause before trusting. Let AI help you think, then verify anything that could cost money, privacy, health, or safety.
