You now know your way around. Here are the everyday things most people use their phone for, and how simple each one is.

Make a phone call: tap the Phone app, tap Contacts or the keypad, tap a name or type a number, tap the green call button. Tap red to hang up.

Take a photo: tap the Camera app, point it, tap the big round shutter button. To see your pictures, open the Photos app.

Get directions: tap Maps (Apple Maps or Google Maps), type where you want to go, tap Directions, and it guides you turn by turn out loud. Wonderful for driving or walking somewhere new.

Set a reminder or timer: say “Hey Siri” or “Hey Google,” then “set a timer for 20 minutes” or “remind me to take my pills at 8.” The phone does it for you.

Check the weather, the news, or look something up: use the Weather app, or tap the search bar in your browser (Safari or Chrome) and type your question in plain words.

A quick example. You are heading to a new doctor’s office. You open Maps, type the address, tap Directions, and set the phone in your car holder. A calm voice guides you the whole way. You arrive relaxed and on time.

What to do:

  • Practice one call, one photo, and one map search this week.
  • Try a voice command like “set a timer for 10 minutes.”
  • When you feel ready, help a friend learn one of these. Teaching cements it.
