Let us walk through creating a free email account and setting it up so it is safe from day one. We will use Gmail as the example; Outlook is nearly identical.
Step by step:
- On your phone or computer, go to gmail.com by typing it into the address bar yourself (do not click a link from a text or ad).
- Choose Create account, then follow the prompts: your name, the email address you want, and a strong passphrase (Lesson 2).
- When asked, add a recovery phone number and a recovery email. This is how you get back in if you are ever locked out, so do not skip it.
- Finish, and you are in. Take a moment to save your new address and passphrase in your password manager.
Safe habits from the start:
- On a shared or public computer, always sign out when you finish, and never tick “keep me signed in.”
- Your provider will never email you asking for your password. Anyone who does is a scammer.
- Keep your recovery phone and email up to date; they are your safety net.
A quick example. You set up Gmail at the library. Before you stand up, you click your picture in the top corner and choose Sign out, so the next person cannot read your mail. Small habit, big protection.
What to do:
- Create your email by typing the provider’s address yourself.
- Set a strong unique passphrase and add recovery phone + email.
- Always sign out on shared devices, and save your details in your password manager.
