A group chat is one conversation with several people in it at once, like a kitchen table where everyone can chime in. It is how many families share news, photos, and plans.

What to expect. When you are added to a group, every message anyone sends shows up for everyone. You will see names next to messages so you know who said what. You do not have to reply to each one; you can just read along and jump in when you have something to add.

How to take part:

  • Open the group conversation like any other message thread.
  • Type or speak your message and send it. Everyone in the group sees it.
  • To send a photo to the whole family, add it the same way as a one-to-one text.

A few comfortable tips:

  • It is okay to be quiet. Reading without replying is completely normal in a group.
  • A heart or thumbs-up counts. Press and hold a message to react with a little symbol when you do not have words.
  • If it gets busy, you can mute a group so it stops buzzing, and still read it when you like. Nobody is told that you muted it.

A quick example. The family group chat lights up with photos from a birthday party you could not attend. You scroll through, smile, and send “What a beautiful cake, wish I was there.” Three people reply with hearts. You were part of the day after all.

What to do:

  • Ask a family member to add you to the family group chat.
  • Send one message or a photo to the group this week.
  • If it buzzes too much, learn to mute it (you will still see every message).
