A video call is a phone call where you can see each other. It is the closest thing to being in the same room, and it is simpler than it looks.
Pick the tool the other person already uses. The easiest video call is the one your family is already on. The three common, free choices:
- FaceTime: built into iPhones and iPads. Best when everyone has Apple devices.
- Google Meet: works on Android and iPhone. Good when the family is mixed.
- WhatsApp: works on any phone and is popular for family far away. Everyone installs the free app once.
How a video call generally works:
- Open the app and find the person’s name in your contacts or list.
- Tap the video camera icon to start the call.
- Their phone rings; when they answer, you both appear on screen.
- Hold the phone a comfortable arm’s length away, in good light, with your face centered.
- To hang up, tap the red button.
Do not worry about the little buttons for muting or flipping the camera at first. You can ignore them. The only ones that matter are “answer,” “start video,” and the red “hang up.”
A quick example. Your granddaughter calls you on FaceTime. Your phone rings and shows her name and a green “answer” button. You tap it, and there she is, waving. You prop the phone against a coffee cup so your hands are free, and you talk for ten minutes. That is a video call.
What to do:
- Ask one family member which app they use, and install it if needed.
- Practice one short video call with them, just to say hello.
- Sit near a window or lamp so they can see you clearly.
